Facts & Facets to Learn about BOPP Films

Being a variant of polypropylene or PP, BOPP implies biaxially-oriented polypropylene. It’s a printing surface that can be manufactured into stickers, labels, textiles, and a slew of plastic materials and parts.

BOPP is polypropylene, which is stretched flat. It is oriented with the system stretching in two directions. Thus, the biaxially-oriented or BO becomes a part of BOPP. Three common processes can be practiced to make BOPP –simultaneous tenter frame orientation, double bubble process, and tenter frame sequential process.

Common Applications of BOPP Films

BOPP holds the importance to have PP plastic’s properties like ruggedness, moisture resistance, fatigue resistance, low toxicity, flexible finishing, and controllable transparency (or translucency). They make easily-printable and long-lasting stickers & labels, while the off-the-shelf adhesives cannot get attached to the material. It’s perfect for food-safe and long-lasting labels. Mentioned below are the common applications of BOPP films:

       Food packaging labels

       Plastic ropes

       Containers

       Medical-grade plastics

       Performance textiles

       Laboratory items

Reasons Why BOPP Is Great for Labels

Without decorating, these BOPP labels can be immersed in the ice-water and even subjected to high-humidity. BOPP Labels made are extremely tough, and materials provide outstanding resistance to fatigue in comparison to other label materials. These labels comprise an unusual resistance to bases, acids, and solvents.

BOPP films are made metal-colored, white, or even crystal clear. The ability to create clear BOPP films results in transparent label creations. In this manner, the content becomes clearer to get viewed. BOPP films can also build waterproof labels, provided the right use of inks & adhesives.

For food packaging, BOPP offers a host of advantages. Besides being non-toxic, the material is resistant to acids and solvents. Many beverage and food items are acidic, including tomatoes, coffee, citrus, etc. Although these items don’t come in contact with labels in general, they have limited contacts during the manufacturing process. With BOPP films, this issue gets mitigated. Besides, using BOPP films for biscuit packaging is extremely environment-friendly.

BOPP films have acquired critical acclaims from both end-users as well as manufacturers. Currently, it has garnered momentum in the packaging arena of the 21st century.

High barrier films best packaging solutions

For the past almost half a century, films have been used for different packaging things.  From the stretch films in the 1970s to the single-layered and multilayered films of the 80s, in the last decade, the high barrier packaging films are widely used worldwide. It is the reason it reached the expert’s prediction of 15.9 billion USD global market size in 2019 at a CAGR of 5%  With more and more items packed to extend shelf life, and it is only to increase more in the future.

Need for high barrier package films

How to the Perfect type of Food Packaging

Food packaging has many uses. Some help create portion sized items, others offer information on the packs, while some like biscuit packaging protect the food as well. These package options are largely bifurcated into nine types. They are:

1. Aseptic processing: These packages are for sterile foods or for food items that need to be sterile. These include milk and its various products, liquid eggs and other foods that need processing and preserving for a long duration. They are made up of a mixture of polyethylene, paper and aluminium.

2. Bags: They are the most common form of packaging used for fruits, snacks and chips. The bags are made up of various types of plastics with or without an inner lining of metal meant to separate the food from the environment.

3. Boxes: They are used for food products that need easy transportation like frozen or fresh pizzas, cereals, crackers, etc. They are generally made up of wood, metal or corrugated fiberboards.

4. Cartons: Cartons and boxes are both made up of corrugated fiberboard. The cartons however have four sub-categories. The most common is the egg carton which is molded in the shape of the egg to protect them. Aseptic cartons contain milk and soup. The folding cartons are flat pieces of fiberboards that are assembled by the manufacturer and the gable top cartons have a top that can be pinched and pulled to be opened.

5. Trays: These are shallow pans in which meats and plant seeds are carried. They usually have a raised edge to hold the product in place and are generally made out of paperboard and wrapped with paper or polyethylene.

6. Cans: These are almost entirely made of metals and are used to preserve and transport food items. Many cans are also made of glass especially when they are used to can food items at homes.

7. Flexible packs: These are similar to bags and are meant to protect the food from the environment like bagged salads.

8. Pallets: These are used mainly for mass transportation of various products by all industries by stacking them on top of these pallets.

9. Wraps: They are individual food packaging done to protect the food from the environment and when handled by hand like candy bars and biscuit packaging. A tight wrap of biscuits is associated with a better product by the consumers.
