Keeping Packs Clear When Fresh Food Meets Cold Air

Fresh produce appears at its best when it can be seen clearly; however, small water droplets frequently ruin that view within a cold pack and as a result shoppers leave without making a purchase. A solution to this problem is the Antifog BOPP Film, which keeps the surface clear even when the cabinet is cold.

What Causes Fogging

Vegetables, fruits, and baked goods emit warm, moist air. On coming into contact with a cooler surface this forms droplets that scatter light and thus create a cloudy appearance. As ordinary polypropylene sheets are naturally water repellent, the droplets remain spherical. In the case of a treated sheet the surface tension is reduced by means of a special additive and the water spreads to form a thin transparent layer.

Where It Is Used

This substance is commonly used for packing salads, herbs, and mushrooms, and coatings for bakery trays and sandwich wraps. Mostly it is applied in cold storage rooms and supermarket displays as it enhances visibility and allows staff to identify any spoilage. As customers tend to trust what they can see many retail chains have asked for antifog film.

Points to Remember

The treatment may be used on one side or on both sides and the right side should be selected for the inner surface of the pack. Before a grade is given, performance is tested at a number of different temperatures. The heat sealing must be enacted at the correct settings to make sure that the seals remain tight. Antifog BOPP Film is available in a variety of thicknesses so that the weight of the pack can be adjusted. The rolls should be stored away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Guidance regarding the test data and shelf life should be obtained from the supplier.

Closing Note

Packings that are clear and transparent are noticed and selected; a slight change in material can result in a big increase in sales. For any business which sells fresh products, antifog film is a practical solution.
